Pictures, as well as a month-long simultaneous release on the HBO Max streaming service. Multiple attempts to make such a film have been made, and it is considered to be a difficult work to adapt to the screen owing to its breadth of content. There have been two separate live-action adaptations released prior to this film; 1984’s Dune directed by David Lynch, and a 2000 miniseries on the Sci Fi Channel, which was produced by Richard P. Rubinstein, who held the Dune film rights since 1996. In 2008, Paramount Pictures announced that they had a new feature film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dunes in development with Peter Berg set to direct. In October 2009, Berg left the project, with director Pierre Morel brought on to direct in January 2010, before Paramount dropped the project in March 2011 as they could not come to key agreements with their rights expiring back to Rubinstein.

On November 21, 2016, it was announced that Legendary Pictures had acquired the film and TV rights for Dune. In December 2016, Variety reported that director DenisVilleneuve was in talks with the studio to direct the film. By February 2017, Brian Herbert, son of Frank and author of later books in the Dunes series, confirmed that Villeneve would be directing the project. It was announced in December 2018 that cinemographer Roger Deatatakins was coming onto the project as director of photography. In January 2019, Joe Walker was confirmed to be serving as the film’s editor. Other crew members include Brad Walker, Brad Riker, Kim Tull, Byron Merritt, Jon Spaihts, Richard Pull, Richard Harrison, John Thomas Wull, and Cale Boyer. John Nelson was hired as the visual effects supervisor for the film in July 2018, but has since left theProject has been described as a sci-fi adventure with a twist on the classic science-fiction theme. It will be produced by Villeneuce, Mary Parent, Mary W. Parent, Richard Rubinstein and Thomas Wulff, with production designer Mary Parent serving as supervising director of art design. The movie will be released in October 2021, and will cover roughly the first half of the book. The book was published in 1965 and is considered one of the best-selling novels of all time.
