Darrell Lance Abbott was an American musician and songwriter. He was the guitarist of the heavy metal bands Pantera and Damageplan, both of which he co-founded alongside his brother Vinnie Paul. Abbott was shot and killed by a deranged fan while on stage with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8, 2004.

Abbott took up the guitar when he was 12 and was inspired by Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Kiss and Van Halen, though he was unable to play the instrument at the time. He is the second son to Carolyn and Jerry Abbott, a country music producer. He and Vinnie were “inseparable” after they began playing music together, Vinnie said in a 2016 interview. The brothers lived with their mother Carolyn, in a ranch-style house on Monterrey Street in Arlington, Texas. Abbott’s parents divorced in 1979, after seventeen years of marriage, but his family life remained happy. His elder brother was born on March 11, 1964, and his father died in 1986, at the age of 69. He died of a heart attack on December 9, 2004, in Columbus. He leaves behind a wife and two children. He also leaves a daughter and a son, who he met while playing in Pantera, and a daughter, who is also a musician.

Abbott is survived by his wife, two sons, and two step-daughters. He had a son with his second wife, Jennifer, who died in 2010, and one daughter with her third husband, Michael. Abbott had a daughter with his third wife, Sarah, who passed away in 2012, at age 46. He has a son and a step-daughter with his fourth wife, who also played in Panteras. Abbott and his brother were friends with the late Dave Mustaine, who was also a member of Pantera. In 1989, Abbott asked Mustaine to join his band Megaine. Mustaine agreed, on the condition that Darrell would also join Megaine’s band, Megaine Mustaine. Abbott later joined Damageplan with his brother, and the band released New Found Power, the band’s debut and only album, in 2004. Abbott also had a collaboration with David Allan Coe titled Rebel Meets Rebel, and numerous guest guitar solos for bands such as Anthrax. In 2011, Abbott was ranked No. 92 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time, and No. 19 on Louder’s list of the 50 Greatest Guitarist of All time. Abbott died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in Columbus on December 10, 2004; he had been on tour with Pantera when the shooting took place.
