It would become responsible for launching the acting careers of its young lead stars James Van der Beek, Michelle Williams, and Katie Holmes, who had varying acting experience prior to being cast in the show. Actors Charlienam, Jesse Tyler Speedman, Scott Grenier, Adrian Ferguson, and Adam Brody also auditioned for the role of Dawson, while Adam Brodner read for the female role of Pacey. The final cast member was Selma Blair, who filmed herself in her mother’s basement with her mother reading Dawson’s lines, with her eyes just stained with loneliness. It was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina and was produced by Columbia TriStar Television and was filmed on location in Boston, Massachusetts, with some scenes filmed in North Carolina.

The last episode of the show aired on May 13, 2003, and was followed by a special episode on May 15, 2004, which was the final episode of The WB’s freshman series, Party of Five.
