In his first season as head coach of Mississippi State in 2009, his team went 5–7 against the toughest schedule in the nation. In 2012, Mississippi State opened with a 7–0 record, and a number 13 ranking, entering a game vs number 1, undefeated Alabama. In 2014, he led the Bulldogs to one of the greatest seasons in school history, claiming his first win at Top 10.
