One of the eight charter franchises, the major league incarnation of the club was founded in Cleveland in 1901. Originally called the Cleveland Bluebirds, they played in League Park until moving permanently to Cleveland Stadium in 1946. Common nicknames for the Indians include the \”Tribe\” and the \”Wahoos\”, the latter referencing their former logo, Chief Wahoo. Theteam’s mascot is named \”Slider.\” The franchise’s overall record is 9,512–9,062. As of the end of the 2020 season, the Cleveland Indians overall record was 9, 512–9-062. The Cleveland Blues were recreated in 1882 as the Cleveland Blues, because the National League required distinct colors for that season.

The Blues had mediocre records for six seasons and were ruined by a trade war with the Union Association in 1884, when its three best players jumped to the UA after being offered higher salaries. The next year the team moved into League Park, which would serve as the home of the Cleveland professional baseball club for the next 55 years. The Spiders became a contender in the mid-90s, playing in the Temple Cup twice and winning it in 1895. Just weeks before the opener of the 1899 season, Frank Robison bought the St. Louis Browns, thus owning two clubs at the same time: the Spiders and the Browns. The most successful player of all time, Cy Young, was transferred to St Louis just weeks before season opener, including three future Hall of Famers: Cy Young and Cy Young. The club was sold to the New York Yankees for $1.5 million in 1899. The Browns were renamed the ‘Perfectos’ and the rest of the players were traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for $500,000 in 1900. The city’s first professional team was the Cleveland Forest Citys, which played in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NAPA) from 1865 to 1868. Cleveland went without major league baseball for two seasons until gaining a team in 1887. In 1876, the NAPA supplanted the NA as the major professional league. Cleveland was not among its charter members, but by 1879 the league was looking for new entries and the city gained an NL team.
