About Chicago Bears in brief

Summary Chicago BearsThe Chicago Bears are a professional American football team based in Chicago. The franchise was founded in Decatur, Illinois, on September 17, 1920, and moved to Chicago in 1921. It is one of only two remaining franchises from the NFL’s founding in 1920, along with the Arizona Cardinals. The Bears have won nine NFL Championships, including one Super Bowl, and hold the NFL record for the most enshrinees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the most retired jersey numbers. The team played home games at Wrigley Field on Chicago’s North Side through the 1970 season; they now play at Soldier Field on the Near South Side, adjacent to Lake Michigan. They have a long-standing rivalry with the Green Bay Packers, which dates back to 1921. The club was established by the A. E. Staley food starch company of Decatur,. Illinois as a company team. In 1922, Halas changed the team name from the Staleys to the Bears. As with several early NFL franchises, the Bears derived their nickname from their city’s baseball team. Halas liked the bright orange-and-blue colors of his alma mater, the University of Illinois, and the Bears adopted those colors as their own, albeit in a darker shade of each. The Bears dominated the league in the early years. Their rivalry with Chicago Cardinals, the oldest in the NFL, was key in four out of the first six league titles. In 1924 the Bears claimed the Championship after defeating the Cleveland Bulldogs on December 7, even though their games after November 30 did not count towards league standings.

Their only losing season came in 1929, when the Bears had had a flat-lined draw and attendance would only increase. The NFL took action as a consequence of the Bears’ aggressive signing of Red Grange, a college player who could not be signed until his senior class had graduated. Despite much of the team’s success, the team were a trouble spot in 1929. They faced the problem of increased operating costs and would only draw a flatline in attendance. During the 1920s the club was responsible for triggering the league’s long- standing rule that a player could only be signed within a day of his final game as a collegian on the final day of the season. In 1929, the NFL took the action as consequence of that action as well as the fact that the team would not be allowed to sign a player until the player had graduated from college. In the 1930s, the club would also have to pay a fine if they did not sign the player within a week of the final game of his senior season. During that year, the Chicago Bears won the NFL Championship in 1921 and remained competitive throughout the decade. They also won the Championship in 1924, even putting the title on the line against Cleveland Bulldogs. In 1950, the franchise won the championship again after beating the Canton Bulldogs in the World Championship game. In 1951, the Bears reached the Super Bowl by defeating the Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game.
