Owens was raised in Stamford, Connecticut, by her grandparents from around the age of 11 or 12, after her parents divorced. She said her paternal grandfather Robert Owens, a Black American, was born in North Carolina. Owens is also of Caribbean American heritage through her grandmother who is originally from Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2007, Owens said she received three racist death threat voicemail messages, totaling two minutes, that were traced to a car in which the 14-year-old son of then-Mayor, and future governor, Dannel Malloy was present. Owens’ family sued the Stamford Board of Education in federal court, alleging that the city did not protect her rights, resulting in a USD 37,500 settlement in January 2008. In 2012, Owens took a job as an administrative assistant for a private equity firm in Manhattan, New York, later moving up to become its vice president of administration. In 2015, Owens was CEO of Degree180, a marketing agency that offered consultation, production, and planning services.

The website included a blog which frequently posted anti-conservative and anti-Trump content, including mockery of his penis size. In 2017, Owens launched Red Pill Black, a website that promotes black conservatism. On November 21, 2017, at the MAGA Rally and Expo in Rockford, Illinois, Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk announced that Owens had been hired as the organization’s communications director of urban engagement. In April 2018, Owens announced her departure as Communications Director for the organization. She thinks President Donald Trump’s fans are derision among some of his fans. She has a TEDx talk on the subject. Owens said in 2017, ‘I became a conservative overnight. I realized that liberals were actually the racists… Social Autopsy is why I’m conservative\”. In September 2017, she began posting videos to YouTube in the United States that promote politically themed YouTube channels. She also has her own YouTube channel, Candace Amber Owens Farmer, that she runs with her husband, Mark O’Mara, and her daughter, Kaitlin Owens, who lives in New York City. In 2018, she met with some of President Trump’s supporters at a MAGA rally and said that she thinks he is having a big impact on our politics in the country. In July 2018, President Trump tweeted that he loves Owens and that she represents an “expansion of our country in a big-expexpexp-expansion-expand-expression” way.
