It entered into a limited release in the United States on December 13, 2019, before a wide release on December 20, by Lionsgate. Bombshell’s box office results were seen as disappointing but the film received mostly favorable reviews, with critics praising its acting as well as the makeup and hair. At the 92nd Academy Awards, it earned three nominations: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, winning the latter. It also received two nominations at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, four at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards and three at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards. The theme song, \”One Little Soldier\”, performed by Regina Spektor, won the 2020 \”Best Song Written or Recorded for a Film\” from the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards.

It was announced in May 2017 that Annapurna Pictures was in the early stages of developing a film centered on the allegations made against Ailes by female employees, including Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson. On May 18, 2017, shortly after Ailes’s death, it was announced that the film would be directed by Roach. On August 1, 2018, Roach announced that AJ1 would act as the film’s producers and Denver and Delilah Productions would serve as the production company. The following week, Lionsgate began negotiating to help finance the film after Focus Features and Amblin Entertainment passed on the project. On October 9, 2018 it was confirmed that Focus Features had dropped out of producing the film, reportedly due to growing concerns over the film’s growing budget. On November 8, the film was confirmed to be released on December 20, 2019. It has been released in limited release and wide release.
