It received numerous awards and nominations, with seven nominations at the 91st Academy Awards including Best Picture, with wins for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. It is the first superhero film to receive a Best Picture nomination and the first MCU film to win an Academy Award. A sequel, with Cooglers returning to write and direct, is scheduled for July 2022. In Black Panther, T’challa is crowned king of Wakanda following his father’s death, but he is challenged by Killmonger who plans to abandon the country’s isolationist policies and begin a global revolution.

In Wakanda, the Wakandans use the vibranium to develop advanced technology and isolate themselves from the world by posing as a Third World country. In 1992, Wakanda’s King T’ Chaka visits his brother N’Jobu, who is working undercover in Oakland, California. T’ chaka accuses N’Chaka’s partner of assisting black-market arms dealer Ulysses Klaue with stealing vibranIUM from Wakanda. In the present day, following T’Chaka’s death, his son T‘Challa returns to Wakanda to assume the throne. He and Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje regiment, extract his ex-lover from an undercover assignment so she can attend the coronation ceremony with his mother Ramonda and younger sister Shuri. At the ceremony, the Jabari Tribe’s leader M’Baku challenges T”Baku for the crown in combat. When T Challa defeats M’Baku and persuades him to yield, rather than die to yield him to his accomplice Erik Stevens, he takes the crown. In May 2017, additional casting was added, making Black Panther the first Marvel film with both a predominantly black cast and a blackdirector. In September 2005, Marvel Studios announced a Black Panther film as one of ten based on Marvel characters and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
