About Beelzebub in brief

Summary BeelzebubBeelzebub or Beelzebul is a name derived from a Philistine god, formerly worshipped in Ekron, and later adopted by some Abrahamic religions as a major demon. The name is associated with the Canaanite god Baal. He is known in demonology as one of the seven princes of Hell. The Dictionnaire Infernal describes him as a being capable of flying, known as the “Lord of the Flyers’’. In the Testament of Solomon, he appears as prince of the demons and says that he was formerly a leading heavenly angel who was associated with Hesperus. In Mark 3: 22, the scribes accuse Jesus of driving out demons by the power of Bealzebul, the prince of demons, the name also appearing in the expanded version in Matthew 12: 24,27 and Luke 11: 15, 18–19. In Matthew 10: 25, Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them,Every kingdom divided will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand against itself.

If Satan is divided against himself, how then can I drive out his kingdom? And if your people do not drive them out? So then they will be your judges of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. It is unknown whether Symmachus was correct in identifying these names, because we know nothing about either of them. The word zebub may be the original affix to Baal and that it is a substitute for an original zbl which, after the discoveries of Ras Shamra, has been connected with the title of “prince” frequently attributed to Baal in mythological texts. It might derive from a slurred pronunciation of zebûb; from zebul, used to mean ‘dung’ in Hebrew.
