He has been in controversies and news due to his politics primarily centered around minorities like Muslims and Dalits. His father Sultan Salahuddin and brother Akbaruddin are also politicians. The couple has six children which includes one son, Sultan uddin OWAisi and five daughters. He lives in Shastripuram, Mailardevpally, Hyderabad and is fluent in Urdu Hindi and English. He wears a long sherwani, an Islamic cap and sports a clipped beard. He was compared to his Muslim Muslim brother Chanderi in 2008, when the Left Front of India withdrew their support to the central government. This was done in response to the Indo-US nuclear deal signed in 2008. The Communist parties felt that India would become a pawn of the United States of America.

The Left Front withdrew support, which was led by the United Progressive Alliance, in a vote of confidence in Parliament held by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. The vote was opposed by the Muslims of India, who claimed that Muslims of Uttar Pradesh opposed the nuclear deal and wanted to keep nuclear bombs in India. He also succeeded Qasim Razvi as the party president after he was released from prison. In 2004, he was succeeded by Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri as the member of the Assembly from the constituency. His youngest brother Burhanuddin Owaiti is the editor of Etemaad. His eldest daughter was engaged to Barkat Alam Khan, grandson of Nawab Shah Alam Khan and Dr. Moinuddin Khan Sandozai, on 24 March 2018. His mother is Nazima Begum and he is married to Farheen O Waisi. He comes from a political family of Hyderabad. His grandfather and father have been presidents of the party, of which his father and grandfather have been president.
