Anderson Hays Cooper is an American television journalist. He is the primary anchor of the CNN news broadcast Anderson Cooper 360°. He also serves as a correspondent for 60 Minutes on CBS. Cooper is the younger son of the writer Wyatt Emory Cooper and the artist, fashion designer, and heiress Gloria Vanderbilt. His older brother, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, died by suicide in 1988.

Cooper is the younger son of the writer Wyatt Emory Cooper and the artist, fashion designer, writer, and heiress Gloria Vanderbilt. His older brother, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, died by suicide on July 22, 1988, at age 23, by jumping from the 14th-floor terrace of Vanderbilt’s New York City penthouse apartment. Cooper considers his father’s book Families to be a guide on how he would have wanted me to live my life. He pursued journalism with no formal journalistic education and is a self-proclaimed \”news junkie since was in utero. At age 17, after graduating from Dalton a semester early, Cooper traveled around Africa for several months on a \”survival trip\”. He contracted malaria on the trip and was hospitalized in Kenya. After his first correspondence work in the early 1990s, he took a break from reporting and lived in Vietnam for a year, during which time he studied the Vietnamese language at Vietnam National University, Hanoi. After Cooper graduated from Yale, he tried to get his foot in the door of on-air reporting with ABC but was unsuccessful. He was ultimately able to sell his home-made news segments to Channel One One, which produces a youth-oriented news program that is broadcast to many junior high and high schools in the United States.

Cooper then entered the news business with his own forged press pass and met with students fighting the Burmese government. He has been married to his wife, Kelly, since 2007. They have two children, a son, and a daughter. They live in Manhattan, New York, with their son, Cooper, and their daughter, Cooper Hays, is a junior at the University of New York at St. John’s, where she is a pre-med student. They also have a daughter, Anderson Hays Jr., who is a senior at the New York University School of Medicine. Cooper has two sons, Cooper Cooper III and Cooper Cooper IV, with his daughter, Adriana Hays-Cooper, who lives in New York. Cooper’s father suffered a series of heart attacks while undergoing open-heart surgery, and died January 5, 1978, at the age of 50. Through his \”Vanderbilt\” line, he is a second cousin, once removed, of screenwriter James Vanderbilt. He is also a descendant, through his mother, of Civil War brevet Major General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, who was with General William T. Sherman on his march through Georgia. Cooper’s maternal grandparents were millionaire equestrian Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt and socialite Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, and his maternal great-great-great grandfather was business magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt.
