Benjamin Woolfield Mountfort was an English emigrant to New Zealand. He became one of that country’s most prominent 19th-century architects. He is credited with importing the Gothic revival style to New Zealander. He died in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1913, at the age of 80.

Summary Benjamin MountfortBenjamin Woolfield Mountfort was an English emigrant to New Zealand. He became one of that country’s most prominent 19th-century architects. He was instrumental in shaping the city of Christchurch’s unique architectural identity and culture. His Gothic designs constructed in both wood and stone in the province are considered unique. Today, he is considered the founding architect of the province of Canterbury. Heavily influenced by the Anglo-Catholic philosophy behind early Victorian architecture. He is credited with importing the Gothic revival style to New Zealander. He died in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1913, at the age of 80. He leaves behind a wife, three children and a wife-to-be, Emily Elizabeth Newman, who he married 18 days after arriving in New Zealand in 1850. He also leaves a son, Charles, a daughter, Susannah, and a son-in-law, Isaac Luck, who also emigrated with him to the new colony of Canterbury in 1852. Mountfort is survived by his wife, Emily, and three children, Charles and Susannah. He has also left a wife and two daughters, who live in the United States, and one son, David, who lives in the UK. He will be remembered as one of the most important architects of the 20th century.
