Irving’s father was film and stage director Jules Irving and her mother is actress Priscilla Pointer. Her brother is writer and director David Irving, and her sister, Katie Irving, is a singer and teacher of deaf children. She is of Russian-Jewish descent, though her maternal great-great-grandfathers was also Jewish.

She has two children, Katie and David Irving. She also has a stepson, Robert Symonds, who was her stepfather after her father died and her mom remarried. She currently lives in New York City with her husband and two children. Her husband is actor and director Michael Douglas, and they have a son, Alex Douglas, who is also an actor and has appeared in several films and TV shows. She had a walk-on role in the 1965–66 Broadway show The Country Wife at age 12. She starred with Richard Dreyfuss in 1980 in The Competition in Honeysuckle Rose, which also marked her on-screen singing debut. She then starred in the Brian DePalma-directed The Fury as Gillian Bellaver.
