The 2020 Moldovan presidential election was held on 1 November. Voters had the possibility to elect a new president or re-elect the incumbent Igor Dodon. Because no candidate received a majority of votes in the first round, a run-off between the top two candidates, Maia Sandu and Dodon, was held. Sandu won the second round with 57. 72% of the vote, becoming the first female President of the country. The Constitution of Moldova defines four conditions that a presidential candidate must satisfy: Moldovan citizenship, at least 40 years of age, residence in Moldova for at least 10 years, and ability to speak the state language. Article 80 of the Constitution establishes a term limit: one individual cannot serve more than 2 terms in a row. Candidates can be nominated by a political party, an electoral alliance, or run as independents. They have to collect at least 15,000 voter signatures in their support from at least half of Moldovan’s level 2 administrative territorial units with at least 600 signatures in each of them. The election results can be considered valid only if the turnout is above or equal to 33%. The candidate who receives an absolute majority of the votes is elected president. The candidate with the largest number of votes then becomes president, with a term of office of up to five years. The winner of the election will be the first winner from the Party of Action and Solidarity and the first pro-European candidate in the country’s history. The president will be inaugurated on January 1, 2020.

The current president will serve a five-year term, starting on January 2, 2020, until the end of his second term in office on January 20, 2023. The incumbent will serve his third term, ending on January 21, 2022. The next president will then serve a four-year terms, ending in 2023, until his fourth term ends on January 25, 2028. The term of the president will end on January 30, 2029, and the next presidential election will take place on January 31, 2030. The presidential election is the fourth direct presidential election since independence in 1991. The first presidential election to be held in Moldovan history was held in 1991, when the country was still part of the Soviet Union. It was the first time that Moldova has been a member of the European Union. The last time was in 2004, when Moldova was part of Romania, when it was still a republic. The Moldovan parliament will hold its first elections on January 15, 2008. The elections will be followed by a referendum on whether or not to join the EU, which will be held on January 17, 2009. The results of the referendum will be announced on January 18, 2008, with the winner to be announced the following day. The second round of the presidential election takes place on February 1, 2008 and the winner will be known as the winner of that round. The third round will be decided on February 14, 2008 with the results to be known on February 15, 2009 and the fourth round on February 16, 2008 (the second round is the third round).
