The plot revolves around a cure that causes serious repercussions among mutants and humans, and on the resurrection of Jean Grey. Critics have criticized the film’s screenplay, overuse of characters, style and lack of dynamics. It had extensive visual effects created by 11 different companies, and was consequently the most expensive film made at thetime of its release. The movie was directed by Brett Ratner and written by Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn, with a budget of USD 210 million, and took place from August 2005 to January 2006.

In the present, Worthington Labs announces it has developed an inoculation to suppress theX-gene that gives mutants their abilities and offer the cure to any mutant who wants it. Magneto re-establishes his Brotherhood of Mutants with those who oppose the cure, warning his followers that the cure will be forcefully used to exterminate the mutant race. Scott Summers, still distraught over the loss of his fiancée Jean Grey, drives to her resting location at Alkali Lake. When they arrive, they find only telekinetically floating rocks, Summers’ glasses, and an unconscious Jean. Jean appears to Summers but, as the two kiss, Jean kills him. Logan is disgusted to learn that she is not the Jean Grey he once knew. She resurfaces with the Phoenix and destroys the house and disintegrates with Magneto before Logan can stop her. When Logan and Storm return to X-Mansion, Jean explains to Logan that she sacrificed herself to save them, she also freed the dark Phoenix, a powerful alternate personality which repressed and repressed Xavier’s telepathically repressed mind. The Phoenix emerges, knocks out Logan and escapes to her childhood home. Logan and Jean arrive at the same time as the Brotherhood as Magneto, and Magneto learns of Jean’s resurrection through the time of the Phoenix.
