Summary Weight Gain 4000“Weight Gain 4000” is the second episode of the first season of the American animated television series South Park. It first aired on Comedy Central in the United States on August 20, 1997. In the episode, the residents of South Park prepare for a visit by celebrity Kathie Lee Gifford, whom the boys’ third-grade teacher Mr. Garrison plans to assassinate because of a childhood grudge. Meanwhile, Cartman becomes extremely obese after constantly eating a bodybuilding supplement called Weight Gain 4000. The episode was written and directed by series co-founders Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It was also the first South Park episode created completely using computers rather than construction paper. Some reviewers criticized the episode for its profanity and other material deemed offensive at the time of its original broadcast, but several others felt it was a significant improvement over the pilot. It introduced such recurring characters as Jimbo Kern, Mayor McDaniels, Bebe Stevens and Clyde Donovan. It also featured the first time a celebrity was spoofed in South Park, with the show’s portrayal of KathieLee Giffords being spoofed by Trey Parker in the episode “Kathie Lee” The episode is still considered to be one of the best South Park episodes to date, with some critics calling it the best of the series. It is also the only episode to feature the character of Chef, who sings a song to seduce the celebrity, and the first to feature a female lead character in a South Park TV show, “South Park Live” It was the first episode to be produced using computers instead of construction paper, and was the last to be directed by Matt Stone, who also wrote the script for the pilot episode “Cartman Gets an Anal Probe” It is the last episode to have a male lead character, with Cartman playing the lead role in the second-to-last episode, “Karate Kid”, in the series’ finale, “The Last Dragon” (season 2, episode 8).

The episode also features the first appearance of the character Kenny, who plays the role of the town’s mayor, “Clyde Donovan”, in an episode that was originally broadcast as the third episode “The First Dragon” (“South Park: The Second Dragon” season 3, episode 4). It was released on DVD on September 11, 1998. It has been released on Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S. and on Blu/ray in the UK on September 13, 1998, and on DVD in Australia on September 14, 1998 (the UK release date is September 15, 1998). The DVD version of the episode also includes a bonus clip of Kenny as well as a deleted scene of Kenny’s father, Kenny’s mother, Chef, and a deleted video of Cartman as a young boy playing the part of a Native American.
