Shakur was born in Manhattan, a borough of New York City, but relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988. He moved to Los Angeles in 1993 to further pursue his music career. On September 7, 1996, Tupac was shot four times by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas; he died six days later and the gunman was never captured. In 2002, he was inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone named Shakur in its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. He also gained considerable success as an actor, with his starring roles as Bishop in Juice, Lucky in Poetic Justice, and Jake in Gang Related. He has sold over 75 million records worldwide, and his albums have been certified platinum in the United States. The Notorious B. I. G., Shakur’s friend turned rival, was at first considered a suspect, but was also murdered in another drive- by shooting six months later. Tupac’s godfather, Elmer \”Geronimo\” Pratt, was convicted of murdering a school teacher during a 1968 robbery, although his sentence was overturned. His stepfather Mutulu Shakur spent four years among the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. He was convicted for the 1981 robbery of a Brinks armored truck, during which police officers were killed and imprisoned.

In 1984, he moved from New York to Baltimore, Maryland. He attended eighth grade at Roland Park Middle School. On the transfer to the Baltimore High School for the Arts, he studied acting, jazz, and ballet. He performed in Shakespeare’s plays—depicting gang warfare, he would recall as the Mouse King in The Nutcracker. As a teen, he won competitions as reputed the best rapper, he could mix all crowds with his humor, and he could beatbox with his friend Dana Smith as the beatboxer. He had a half-sister, Sekyiwa, two years his junior, and a stepbrother, Mopreme \”Komani\” Shakur. His mother Afeni Shakur had been active Black Panther Party members in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She was acquitted of over 150 charges, in sum, \”Conspiracy against the U.S. government and New York landmarks. I wanted him to know he was part of a world culture and not just from a neighborhood. \” Tupac had an older stepbrother and half-Sister, who was two years younger than he was.
