It was the final film of composer James Horner, who died the previous year after composing part of the score. Principal photography began on May 18, 2015, in the north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It premiered on September 8, 2016, at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, and was released in the United States on September 23, 2016 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Sony Pictures Releasing through its Columbia Pictures label, in conventional and IMAX theatres.
