The series is set in an afterlife in which humans are sent to the Good Place or the Bad Place after death. It has received critical acclaim for its writing, acting, originality, setting, and tone. Among other accolades, the series has received a Peabody Award and three Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. It has also been nominated for fourteen Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series for its third and fourth seasons. The final season eventually proves that humans can show moral improvement in the afterlife. The group institutes a new system whereby deceased humans will earn their way into the Good place by passing tests of moral development; and then, to avoid becoming numbed by the ennui of eternal bliss, humans may choose to peacefully end their afterlife. In the final episode, Jason, Chidi, and Eleanor eventually choose to exit; Tahani becomes a designer of afterlife environments, and Michael is allowed to be sent to Earth to live as a human. The show was set around Eleanor Shellstrop designing her own self-improvement course with Michael acting as her guide – although Bell has stated the afterlife element had always been a part of the series, as she was aware of the first-season twist when she signed onto the show.

It was announced that Kristen Bell and Ted Danson had been cast in the lead roles for the series on January 12, 2016. William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, and Manny Jacinto co-star as other residents of the Goodplace, alongside D’Arcy Carden as Janet, an artificial being who assists the residents. The first synopsis of the show was also released, stating that that that was the show’s first synopsis, and that the first episode would be released on August 13, 2015. On March 3, 2016 it was revealed to have been revealed that William Harper was cast as a \”dream-natured DJ whose dream is to make Florida a good place. On February 11, though the character was renamed Chidi, William Jackson Harper was cast as Tessa Jameela Jamil and was renamed Tessa Jackson on February 25, 2016. On March 3, Manny Jacinto was revealed to have been cast as Chris, whose dream is to make a Southern dweller in Florida a good person and a DJ in Southern Florida on February 11, Though the character was  renamed Chidi on February 25, 16, and on February 27, the season of the show of The Good Place of Chris and Tessa was announced as Chris.
