Louisville Metro Police Department
The Louisville Metro Police Department began operations on January 6, 2003. It was formed by the merger of the Jefferson County Police Department and the Louisville Division of Police. The chief of police is appointed by the Mayor of Louisville Metro. In 2008, Louisville recorded 79 murders. In 2018 there were 81 homicides, and 92 in 2019.
