Stephan El Shaarawy

Stephan El Shaarawy is an Italian professional footballer who plays for Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua and the Italy national team. He is nicknamed Il Faraone, as his father is Egyptian. He began his career at Genoa, and was signed by Milan in 2011 after a successful loan at Padova. In 2012, he was named one of the top players after 1991 by Don Balón. He has also represented Italy from under-16 to under-21 levels.

He spent the 2015–16 season on loan with Monaco and subsequently Roma, before signing permanently for the latter. He represented Italy at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they finished in third place, and at UEFA Euro 2016. In 2012, he was named one of the top players after 1991 by Don Balón and he was listed 52nd on the Guardian’s list of the best footballers in the world. He has also represented Italy from under-16 to under-21 levels. He was born in Savona, Italy, to an Egyptian father and a Swiss-Italian mother. He made his debut for Genoa in December 2008, when he was 16 years old. On 18 September 2011, he made his Milan debut against Napoli in a 3–1 loss to Napoli. On 25 July 2012, El Shaerawy signed a new five-year contract with Milan. In August 2012 he made the senior international debut for Italy during a friendly match against England, and in November 2012 scoring his first international goal against France.
