He made his senior international debut for Bosnia in 2013. He was named in Bosnia’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In June 2017, he signed for Arsenal on a free transfer. He scored on his debut against Chelsea in the 2017 FA Community Shield, which Arsenal won on penalties.

On 31 December 2020, it was announced that Kolaşinac would return to SchAlke 04 on loan for the remainder of the season. He is regarded as a versatile defender who can slot into all defensive positions as needed. He has represented Bosnia at youth international level, before making his senior debut for the Bosnia and HerzEGovina national team. He also played at youth level for Germany and VfB Stuttgart.
