It was founded in 2008 by United Spirits and named after the company’s liquor brand Royal Challenge. The franchise has never won the IPL but finished runners-up on three occasions between 2009 and 2016. The team holds the records of both the highest and the lowest totals in the IPl – 2635 and 49 respectively. The brand value of the franchise was estimated to be ₹595 crore in 2019, according to a survey conducted by Duff & Phelps. They have been nicknamed the ‘underachievers’ due to their lack of success over the years despite the presence of notable players such as Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen, Virat Kohli, Zaheer Khan, Anil Kumble, Mark Boucher, Dale Steyn and Cameron White. They were defeated by the table-toppers Mumbai Indians by 35 runs in the 2010 playoff semifinal. In the final against Deccan Chargers, their bowlers, led by Kumble’s 4 for 16, kept the runs down to 14, but they struggled in the runchase, with only four batsmen reaching double figures in the match. In 2012, they were beaten by the Kolkata Knight Riders by six runs in a tense finish, and lost the match by six wickets in the final. In 2013, the team was beaten by Chennai Super Kings by five wickets. In 2014, they lost to the Mumbai Indians in the semifinal by four runs.

In 2015, they finished third in the tournament, losing to the Delhi Daredevils by nine wickets and losing the final by five runs. They are the only team in IPL history to have won more than one game in a single season. The last time they were in the semi-final was in 2007, when they were runner-up to Mumbai Indians. In 2010, they won their first IPL title with a nine-wicket win over the defending champions Deccans. In 2011, they came second in the competition with a seven-wickets win over Mumbai Indians, beating them by nine runs. The Bangalore franchise was purchased by Vijay Mallya, who paid US$111. 6 million for it. It is the second highest bid for a team, next only to Reliance Industries’ bid of US $111. 9 million. It has been named as one of the most successful franchises in the history of the Indian cricket league, with three titles and two runner-ups in the last five years. In 2009, the franchise signed up Kevin Pieterson for a record sum of US$1. 55 million, making him the joint costliest player, along with fellow Englishman Andrew Flintoff who was signed up by the Chennai Super King for the same amount. In 2008, they also signed up Ross Taylor, Misbah-ul-Haq and India under-19 World Cup winning captain Vir at Kohli in the second round of auction.
