Richard John Santorum is an American politician, attorney and political commentator. He served as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania from 1995 to 2007. Santorum ran for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, finishing second to Mitt Romney. He is a social conservative who opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. He was nicknamed “Rooster” for both a cowlick strand of hair and an assertive nature.

In January 2017, he became a CNN senior political commentator, and is a contributor to the network’s “In Depth with Rick Santorum” program. He was nicknamed “Rooster” for both a cowlick strand of hair and an assertive nature, particularly on important political issues. He has been involved in exposing members of Congress involved in the banking scandal of the 1990s. He also served as the Senate’s third-ranking Republican from 2001 to 2007, when he was elected to the House of Representatives. He ran for president again in 2016, but ended his campaign in February 2016 after a poor showing in the Iowa caucuses. He currently lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his wife and two children. He and his wife have three children, two of whom are sons and one daughter. They have a son and daughter-in-law, both of whom have served in the United States Senate and the U. S. House of Rep. Santorum served two terms in the Pennsylvania House of Reps. from 1994 to 2006. He lost his 2006 reelection bid because he was not re-elected to a third term. Santorum is a Roman Catholic and attended Butler Senior High School in Butler, Pennsylvania. He attended Pennsylvania State University for his undergraduate studies, serving as chairman of the university’s College Republicans chapter and graduating with a B.

A. degree with honors in political science in 1980. While in law school, Santorum was an administrative assistant to Republican state senator Doyle Corman. He then completed a one-year M. B A. program at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, graduating in 1981. In 1986, Santorum received a J. D.degree with honors from Dickinson School of Law. He practiced law for four years at the Pittsburgh law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, a firm known for raising political candidates and lobbyists. Santorum left his private law practice in 1990 after his election to the Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district. He decided Democratic congressman Doug Walgren was vulnerable, and took up residence in Walgren’s district. During his campaign Santorum criticized Walgren for repeatedly living outside the district most of the year. In 1993, Santorum joined a minority of Republicans to vote against the North American Free Trade Agreement that prohibited employers from permanently replacing striking employees. He won reelection with 61% of the vote against Walgren in 1992. In 1995, Santorum became a member of the Republican National Committee, where he served until his retirement in 2007. In 1996, he served as chairman for the Pennsylvania Republican Party’s Young Guns PAC. In 2000, he was a co-chair of the Young Guns Caucus, a group that promotes conservative causes. In 2002, he co-chaired the American Principles Project, a conservative think tank that promotes free-market values.
