Penny Marshall

Carole Penny Marshall was an American actress, director, and producer. She came to notice in the 1970s for her role as Laverne DeFazio on the television sitcom LaVerne & Shirley. Marshall made her directorial debut with Jumpin’ Jack Flash before directing Big, which became the first film directed by a woman to gross more than USD 100 million at the U.S. box office. In real-life, Marshall married her boyfriend, Robnld Reiner, who played her boyfriend on The Odd Couple.

Marshall died of lung cancer in 2012, at age 83, at her home in New York City, where she lived with her husband and three children. She has a daughter with her third husband, Richard Marshall, who is also a TV producer and has appeared in several of his films and TV shows. Her final appearance was in the final episode of the hit television series That Girl on All That, starring Marlo Thomas, starring in which she played the role of Gloria Bunker. Marshall also appeared in the film The Savage Seven, which was produced by Sid and Marty Krofft and directed by her brother Garry Marshall. In the film, she played Myrna Myrna, Myrna’s secretary, and held the role for four years. Marshall was also a tap dancer and later taught tap at her mother’s dance school. Her father was of Italian descent and her mother was of German, English, and Scottish descent. She grew up at 3235 Grand Concourse, the Bronx, in a building which was also the childhood home of Neil Simon, Paddy Chayefsky, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.
