The show chronicles the lives of over forty people after their plane crashes on a remote island somewhere in the South Pacific. Paulo is a con artist working with his American girlfriend Nikki, an actress. They lose the diamonds in the plane crash and spend much of their time on the island searching for them. Paulo was written to be unlikable, with the hope he would redeem himself when his backstory was revealed in his final episode. Paulo either resents or is indifferent toward the often heroic actions of some of the survivors, spending much of his time golfing.

The first thing Nikki asks Paulo after the crash is what she would do if they would still be together. At the end of the first season, the writers had the idea that one of the Survivors would emerge and receive an answer to this question in the flashback episode of the second season. The writers had an idea of the answer and received an answer in the first episode of season two. The answer was that Paulo would help her get the diamonds back, which resulted in their deaths. The second episode ofseason two revealed that Paulo and Nikki were the only two survivors who had survived the crash. The episode also revealed that the Others had captured some of Paulo’s fellow survivors; however, Paulo kept this information to himself to protect his relationship with Nikki. The third season of the show revealed that Locke and Hurley had been able to communicate with the Others.
