Her mother considered abortion when Nicole was conceived at 17 years old. She was born in Honolulu, Hawai’i, to Alfonso Valiente of Filipino descent and Rosemary Elikolani Frederick of Native Hawaiian and Ukrainian descent. Her father left the family at the age of two, and her mother adopted Nicole, and whose surname she eventually took. In 2017, she received the Alum of the Year Award from the Wright State Alumni Association for her work on the reality show Popstars USA. She received a nomination for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical and starred in the television film, Dirty Dancing. In 2007, she was inducted to DuPont Manual Alumni’s Hall of Fame as one of the youngest inductees. Since 2013, she has endowed YPAS with a yearly USD 2,000, namesake scholarship.

She has a younger sister, Keala, who she has raised since she was six years old and lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her parents. She attended Wright State University and majored in theatre arts with a dance minor. She graduated in 1996 from the Youth Performing Arts School, where she participated in many plays, including Alice in Wonderland, in which she portrayed Alice. In her final year of college she was hired by Days of the New band leader Travis Meeks to contribute vocals on their second studio album. She dropped out of college to pursue a musical career with American rock band Days of The New and later found modest success in 2001 upon winning a place in Eden’s Crush, a girl group created through The WB’s Popstars. She also appeared in the musical Cats in 2014 and made her West End debut in a 2014 revival of the Musical Cats, for which she received a nominations for best actress in a supporting role in a musical. Her grandfather was a priest, and she was raised as Roman Catholic and would go to church twice a week in order to make her mother proud. She describes her upbringing as difficult as she grew up without much money, and supported her parents by being a waitress, taking local modelling jobs, and being part of an entertainment troupe of the local amusement park, Kentucky Kingdom. She grew up as a waitress and took part in local theatre productions of the musicals Chicago, Guys and Dolls, and Show Boat.
