In the mid-1950s, Young listened to rockabilly, doo-wop, R&B, country, and western pop. In 1959, Young attended the high school Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute. While in Toronto, he was a freshman at the school in 1959. It is rumoured that he was expelled for riding a motorcycle down the hall of the school. He would later relate that he would go to bed at night with his guitar.
