Mussoorie

Mussoorie is a hill station and a municipal board in the Dehradun district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is about 35 kilometres from the state capital of DeHradun and 290 km north of the national capital of New Delhi. The 14th Dalai Lama took up residence at Mus soorie in 1959 during the 1959 Tibetan Rebellion. Today 5,000 Tibetans live in the town, which has an average altitude of 2,005 metres.

The name Mussoorie is often attributed to a derivation of mansūr, a shrub which is indigenous to the area. In 1803 the Gorkhas under Umer Singh Thapa conquered the Garhwal and the Dehra. The highest point is the original Lal Tibba in Landour, with a height of over 2,275 m. The 14th Dalai Lama took up residence at Mus soorie in 1959 during the 1959 Tibetan Rebellion. Today 5,000 Tibetans live in the town, which has an average altitude of 2,005 metres. The town is often referred to as Mansuri by most Indians and is popularly known as The Queen of the Hills. It was the intended terminus of the Great Trigonometric Survey of India that began at the southern tip of the country in 1832. In 1901 the town had a population of 6,461, rising to 15,000 in the summer. The first Tibetan school was established in Mussooria in 1960 and is today headquartered in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh, where the Central Tibetan Administration is currently headquartered. The average temperature is about 2,000 °C. The climate is subtropical highland for the mid-altitude Himalaya, with July and August averaging approximately 660 millimetres of rain per month due to the monsoonal air.
