About Money in the Bank ladder match in brief

Summary Money in the Bank ladder matchThe Money in the Bank ladder match is a multi-person ladder match held by the professional wrestling promotion WWE. The prize is a briefcase containing a contract for a championship match, which can be “cashed in” by the holder of the briefcase at any point in the year following their victory. The first ever match was contested in 2005 at WrestleMania 21, after being invented by Chris Jericho. From its inception until 2017, ladder matches only involved male wrestlers, with the contract being for a world championship match. Beginning with the 2017 event, women also have the opportunity to compete in such a match, with their prize being a match for a women’s championship. The match became dual branded beginning with the 2018 event, involving both the Raw and SmackDown brands with one men’s match and one women’s match with participants evenly divided between the brands. In 2020, a Corporate Ladder gimmick was added on top of the match; both the men’s and women’s matches, which were held at the same time, took place at WWE’s Global Headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut in which the participants began on the ground floor of the building and fought their way to the roof where a ring and ladders were located. The objective is to retrieve a briefcases that is suspended 20 feet above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract that guarantees a match to be held for any world championship in WWE. If the contract is not used within a year of winning it, it will be invalid, but this has yet to happen.

The original match at Wrestlemania 21 was exclusive to the Raw brand. After this, wrestlers had the option to claim the top title at the time, the World Heavyweight Championship, regardless of the brand the wrestler belonged to. In 2006, ECW became a third option until February 2010, when the ECW Championship was deactivated along with the brand along with ECW. Although the WorldHeavyweight Championship ended the year after the event, the contract for its top match was a match at the top of ECW’s top brand. In 2011, Raw’s ladder match was one for the WWE Championship, while Smackdown’s match was for the Raw Women’s Championship. In 2013, the contracts were specifically aimed at one or the other championship, with only a single contract in play. This went into effect beginning in 2014 with the 2014 event. In 2016, the brand split returned shortly after the 2016 event along with a new world title, but the 2017event was Smack down-exclusive and the contract was for its world championship. In 2019, it was made so that the respective winners could challenge either brand’s champion. The 2018 event also included the first-ever women’s Money intheBank ladder match with the winner receiving a contract to be a Smackdowns Women’s Champion. The winner of this match was the winner of the Smack Down Woman’s Championship match, and the match was held on the June 27 episode of SmackDown Live.
