The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In the 1938–39 season, the last year of football before the Second World War, the team finished 14th in the First Division before the resumption of football in October 1945. In October 1945, James W Gibson, who invested £2,000 in 1931, invested in the club and assumed control of the football club. The following year, he led the club to the 14th place in the Second Division, where it remained until the end of the First World War. In November 1945, he sold the club for £1,000, making the club the first British club to do so. After the war, the club relegated to the Second Division in 1925, but regaining promotion to Second Division in 1934. In 1922, three years after the resumption of football following the First World War, the club was relegated to the Third Divison.
