In the present, Sophie Sheridan is preparing for the grand reopening of her mother Donna’s hotel with the help of Señor Cienfuegos, following Donna’s death a year earlier. In a flashback to 1979,. a young Donna graduates from New College, Oxford with Rosie and Tanya and decides to travel the world.

In Paris, she meets Harry Bright, who instantly falls in love with her. They spend the night together, but Donna leaves soon after for Greece. In Croatia, Bordeaux, Stockholm, Oxford, Hampton and at Shepperton Studios, the film was co-produced by Playtone, Littlestar Productions and Legendary Entertainment. In Stockholm, Bill and Harry meet at the docks but are told there are no boats to take them to the island. They then see Sky, who has also come to see Donna in the past, and realize his love for her exceeds any opportunity for any job. On the way, they help a stranded fisherman, Alexio, back to shore in time to stop the love of his life from marrying another. Unbeknownst to Donna, he arrives too late, and sadly watches the boat sailing off in the distance. In New York, Rosie refuses to affirm her and Bill’s demands for her to leave, causing a worried feelings for Sky. However, a storm causes serious disruption to Sophie’s plans for the reopening. Meanwhile, Harry leaves his business deal in Tokyo to support Sophie, while Bill has the same idea, while they meet Alexio who gives Bill, Harry and Sky a boat to give them passage. In London, Tanya visits Sophie, who, like Sophie, is still grieving over the death of Donna.
