Lynsey de Paul was an English singer-songwriter and producer. She had chart hits in the UK and Europe in the 1970s. She was the first British female artist to achieve a number one with a self-written song. She represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, scoring another chart topping hit in Switzerland.

De Paul later claimed that she and her brother suffered physical abuse at the hands of their father. She died on 1 October 2014 at the age of 83. She wrote the song for Peter Noone, but her boyfriend at the time, Dudley Moore, suggested that she take a demo to Gordon Mills, who urged her to record it.
