Founded in 1885, it is nicknamed ‘the Hatters’ and affiliated to the Bedfordshire County Football Association. The team plays its home matches at Kenilworth Road, where it has been based since 1905. The club’s history includes major trophy wins, several financial crises, numerous promotions and relegations, and some spells of sustained success. Luton reached the First Division in 1955–56 and contested a major final for the first time when playing Nottingham Forest in the 1959 FA Cup Final. Between 2007 and 2009, financial difficulties caused the club to fall from the second tier of English football to the fifth in successive seasons. In 2013–14, Luton won the Conference Premier, securing promotion back into the Football League. More success soon followed, with Luton being promoted from League Two and One in successive season in 2017–18 and 2018–19, meaning Luton now play in the Championship, for theFirst time since 2006–07. The Club was the first in southern England to turn professional, making payments to players as early as 1890 and turning fully professional a year later. It was a founder member of the Southern Football League in the 1894–95 season. It then left to form the United League and came second in that league’s inaugural season before moving to a new ground at Dunstable Road in 1897–98. The football club continued to enter a team to compete in the Southern League for the next eight years until 1900, when it was forced to leave the league due to high wages and high travel and accommodation costs.

In 1900, the club won the title and returned to the League United League for two more seasons, winning the title in 1897-98. In the same year, it became the first club in southernEngland to be fully professional, becoming the first professional club in the country. It has a long-standing rivalry with nearby club Watford, with the two teams playing each other regularly in the FA Cup and the League Cup. The Hatters won the FA League Cup in 1988 and were runners-up in two other seasons, the last of which was in 1989. The last time Luton was in England’s top division was in 1992, when the club was in the First division and won its only major honour, the FootballLeague Cup, in 1988. It is the only English club to have won the English League Cup more than once (in 1988 and 1989). The club has also won the Scottish League Cup, the Scottish FA Cup, and the Scottish Football League Championship. It won the League Two Cup twice, in 1991 and 1992. The first of these two seasons saw Luton win the League One title. The second season saw the club finish second in the league and win promotion to League Two. The third season saw it finish third in League Two, and it won promotion to the Championship for the second time in 2012–13. The most recent success saw the team win the Championship title in 2013-14.
