He gained prominence beginning in 1978 as host of The Larry King Show, an all-night nationwide call-in radio program heard on the Mutual Broadcasting System. From 1985 to 2010, he hosted the nightly interview television program Larry King Live on CNN. He hosted Larry King Now which aired on Hulu, Ora TV, and RT America from 2012 to 2020. King was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 19, 1933. His parents were Orthodox Jews who emigrated to the United States from Belarus in the 1930s. King’s father died of a heart attack when King was nine years old. He was greatly affected by his father’s death, and subsequently lost interest in his schoolwork. After graduating high school, he worked to help support his mother. He desired to work in radio broadcasting. A CBS staff announcer, whom King met by chance, suggested he go to Florida which was a growing media market with openings for inexperienced broadcasters. King went to Miami, and after initial setbacks, he gained his first job in radio. He acquired the name Larry King when the general manager claimed that Zeiger was too difficult to remember, so minutes before airtime, Larry chose the surname King, which he got from an advertisement in the Miami Herald for King’s Wholesale Liquor.

King hosted Miami Undercover, airing Sunday nights at 11: 30 p. m. on WPST-TV Channel 10 in May 1960. On the show, he moderated debates on important local issues of the day. King credits his success on local television to the assistance of comedian Jackie Gleason, whose national television variety show was being taped in Miami Beach beginning in 1964. In 1971, he was dismissed by both WIOD and WTVJ as a late-night radio host and sports commentator after being accused of larceny by a former business partner. The charges were dropped and King was rehired by WIOD. For several years during the 1970s he hosted a sports talk-show called Sports-a-la-King that featured 30-minute callers and callers that featured guests such as Bobby Darin and Louis Wolfson. He also wrote a weekly column at the Miami Beach Sun-Beach newspaper for several years. In the 1990s, he wrote a column for the Miami Sun-beach newspaper about the Miami Dolphins. In 2000, King was inducted into the Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame for his work as a sports commentator. He died in a car accident in Florida on December 20, 2011. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. He had a son, Larry King Jr., and a daughter-in-law.
