Prabodhini Ekadashi signifies the awakening of the god. A ritual bath in the Pushkar Lake is considered to lead one to salvation. A holy bath at a tirtha at a pilgrimage centre is prescribed on KartikPurnima. The most popular day for bathing in the Ganges river, especially Varanasi is deemed as most auspicious. The day is also the birthday of Matsya, god Vishnu’s fish-incarnation. This day is considered special for goddess Radha, the lover and eternal consort of god Krishna.

It’s believed that Krishna and Radha danced rasa and Krishna worshipped Radha on this day. In Pushkar, Rajasthan, the pushkar mela commences on Prabodsi Ekadash and continues till Kartik Purnedima. This fair is held in honour of god Brahma, whose temple stands at Pushkar. About 200,000 people and 25,000 camels assemble in Pushkar for the fair. The fair is Asia’s largest camel fair for a fair in Asia. This holy bath is known as snartik snana or in the evening during moonrise or evening. The devotees offer six prayers and offer food to deities such as Shiva, Annakuta, Vrinda, Kartikeya and so forth. The offering of food is so forth so that an offering of the food of the deities is made.
