Karen Sheila Gillan is a Scottish actress and filmmaker. She first began acting with guest roles on television, before receiving recognition for portraying Amy Pond in Doctor Who. She then received widespread recognition for portrays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and for portraying Ruby Roundhouse in the Jumanji film series. On the stage, Gillan appeared in John Osborne’s play Inadmissible Evidence and made her Broadway debut in the play Time to Act.

Gillan relocated to the US in 2013, and starred in the film Oculus, and played the lead in the ABCHulu series Selfie. She then received widespread recognition for portrays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and for portraying Ruby Roundhouse in the Jumanji film series. On the stage, Gillan appeared in John Osborne’s play Inadmissible Evidence and made her Broadway debut in the play Time to Act. In November 2013, she appeared on Broadway in a play called Time to Hour, which told the story of photographer David Bailey’s relationship with supermodel Jean Shrimpton, which included the part of Jean. She also appeared in the television film We’ll Take Manhattan, playing the role of supermodel. She is the daughter of Marie and Raymond Gillan, and was born in Inverness, Scotland, on 28 November 1987.

She moved to London at age 18 to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Prior to her acting career, she worked as a model, premiering at London Fashion Week in 2007. In 2010, she won in the Entertainment category at the Young Scot Awards. She has said she would not give up heracting career to return to modelling, stating that while she enjoyed modelling, acting had always been her main interest and goal. In 2011, she made her first theatre appearance playing therole of Shirley in John Osbourne’s play in Inad permissible Evidence along with Douglas Hodge. The play debuted at the Donmar Warehouse on 16 October 2011. In 2012, she wrote, directed, and starring in the drama film The Party’s Just Beginning. She appeared in a film called Not Another Happy Ending alongside Emun Elliott in August 2011. She was selected by director John McKay because he came to know during the production, which he also directed, that she was a very bubbly, funny, energetic person who was a perfect fit for her character.
