The trap and mumble rap subgenres have become the mostpopular form of hipHop during the late 2010s and early 2020s. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music. It is believed that Keith Cowboy created the term while teasing a friend who had just joined the U.S. Army. For example, he would say something along the lines of “I said a hip-hop-at singing,” in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers. Keith Cowboy, rapper with Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five, and Lovebug Stars, used the term when the music was still known as disco rap, and later worked the cadence into a part of his stage performance.

In the 1950s older folks referred to teen house parties as “hippity hops’”. The words “hip hop” and “hop’s” have a long history, being used together to refer to the two words being used to the term hip hops and the hip hop subculture. The creation of hip hops is often credited to rapper Keith Cowboy and Grand Master Flash, and he is believed to be the origin of the term “ hip hop.” In the early 1990s, hip hop influences increasingly found their way into other genres of popular Music, such as neo soul, nu metal, and R&B. The 1980s marked the diversification of hip Hop as the genre developed more complex styles and spread around the world. Hip Hop continued to diversify at this time with other regional styles emerging, including Southern rap and Atlanta hip hop, and the Southern rap subgenre of trap rap. The mainstream hip hop took on a more melodic, sensitive direction following the commercial decline of gangsta rap in the 1990s and 2000s. During the late 2000s, rappers were able to build up a following through online methods of music distribution, such as social media and blogs, and mainstream hip Hop took on an alternative direction as well. The genre became more mainstream in the early 2010s.
