The movie was negatively received by critics; it was criticized for its screenplay and storytelling, though the performances of the cast received some praise. After buying the rights to Vance’s book in 2017, Imagine announced Howard as the film’s director. Netflix acquired the distribution rights in January 2019. Filming took place from June through August in Georgia and Ohio.

In March 2018, Vanessa Taylor was set to adapt the novel into a screenplay. Ron Howard was spotted in October 2018 scouting possible locations in Perry County, Ohio, and March 2019, he was spotted again scouting locations in Middletown, Ohio. Principal photography began on June 12, 2019, and wrapped on August 8, 43, after a three-day shoot in Ohio, Georgia, and Atlanta, Georgia. In June 2019, the film was picked up by Universal Pictures, who will release it on November 25, 2020. It will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Blu-Ray in the U.S. and on November 26, 2020 in Europe and November 27, 2023 in Australia and 2024 in the UK and 2026 in Australia.
