Gregg Williams

Gregg Williams is an American football coach. He most recently served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets of the National Football League from 2019 to 2020. Previously, he was head coach of the Buffalo Bills and defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints with whom he won Super Bowl XLIV. Williams is known for running aggressive, attacking 4–3 schemes that put heavy pressure on opposing quarterbacks. He was suspended indefinitely from the NFL in March 2012 as a result of his admitted involvement in the Saints bounty scandal.

Williams’ suspension was lifted a year later, and he returned to the NFL. Williams was an assistant coach for the University of Houston under former Redskins head coach, Jack Pardee. In 1990, Williams became the Special Teams coach of the Houston Oilers under then defensive coordinator, Buddy Ryan. From 1997–2000, Williams was promoted to defensive coordinator of the now Tennessee Titans after the Oilers moved out of Houston. In 2005, Williams signed a three-year extension to remain with the Redskins, which made him the highest paid assistant coach in theNFL. In 2007, Williams helped lead the Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV where they lost to the St. Louis Rams. After Joe Gibbs retired, Williams considered to be the most popular candidate to take over as head Coach of the Washington Redskins.

He interviewed four times with team owner Daniel Snyder, with Jim Zorn ultimately getting the job. The position was hired by Mike Smith who was hired to coach the Atlanta Falcons. In 2009, Williams’ approach yielded immediate results, as the Saints’ defense recorded 35 defensive takeaways, second in the league, and played an integral role in their Super Bowl run. He took over as the Cleveland Browns’ interim head coach in 2018, acting as an interim headCoach in the 2018 season. He is married to former New York City Mayor Ed Rendell, and has two children, a son and a daughter. He has been involved in several high-profile deaths, including that of former Saints safety Sean Taylor, who he called ‘the best player ever coached’ in the wake of his death in November 2007. Williams has been a member of the NFL Hall of Fame since the 1980s, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of fame in 2009. He also served as a member of the American Football Hall of Families, as well as the Athletics Commission and the National Football League Hall of Fame for his role in the creation of the NFC East Division and NFC South Divisions. He was the first NFL coach to win a Super Bowl title with the Saints in 2009, and won the Super Bowl with them in 2010.
