Gorillaz are a British virtual band created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. The band primarily consists of four animated members: 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. Their fictional universe is presented in music videos, interviews and short cartoons. In reality, Albarn is the only permanent musical contributor, and Gorillaz’ music often features collaborations with a wide range of featured artists. Remi Kabaka Jr. became producer for the band in 2016 after several years providing the voice of Russels Hobbs and was listed as an official member alongside Albarn in the 2019 documentary Gorillz: Reject False Icons. They have sold over 23 million records worldwide and are cited by Guinness World Records as the world’s \”Most Successful Virtual Band\”. They have won a Grammy Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, an NME Award and three MTV Europe Music Awards. They have also been nominated for 11 Brit Awards and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards. Albarn has said that the first Gorilaz tune was Blur’s ‘On Your Own’, which was recorded for their fifth studio album Blur From 1998 to 2000, and later released on the EP This Comes Tomorrow. The first song they recorded was ‘Rock the House’, which they recorded at Albarn’s newly opened studio 13 Studio 13 in London as well as at Gjam Studios in Jamaica. Although not released under the Gorillazer name, Alb Carn said that that was the name of the first track they recorded under the name ‘Rock The House’ The band’s first single was ‘Ghost’ which was later released as B-side on their single ‘Rock Tomorrow’ The first single they recorded for GorillAZ was ‘On your Own’ which appeared on their first EP ‘This Comes Tomorrow’, released on 27 November 2000, which consisted of mostly tracks that Albarn recorded at his newly newly opened Studio 13 studio 13.

The song was recorded by Albarn at the same time as his first solo album ‘Blur From 2000’, which he recorded at G jam Studios in London. The album was released on 28 November 2000 and went triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe, with sales driven by the success of the album’s lead single ‘Clint Eastwood’ Their second studio album, Demon Days, went 6 times platinum in UK anddouble platinum in US. Their fourth album, The Fall, was recorded on the road during the Escape to Plastic Beach Tour and released on 25 December 2010. Their fifth album, Humanz, was released after a 7-year hiatus on 28 April 2017. Their sixth album,. The Now Now, featured stripped-down production and a greater musical focus on Albarn. The band has presented itself live in a variety of different ways throughout the band’s history, such as hiding the live band from the audience’s view in the early years of the project, projecting animated band members on stage via computer graphics.
