George Headley

George Alphonso Headley OD, MBE was a West Indian cricketer who played 22 Test matches, mostly before the Second World War. He batted at number three, scoring 2,190 runs in Tests at an average of 60. 83, and 9,921 runs in all first-class matches at a average of 69. 86. He was chosen as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1934. He died in a car crash in Jamaica in 2007.

Summary George HeadleyGeorge Alphonso Headley OD, MBE was a West Indian cricketer who played 22 Test matches, mostly before the Second World War. Headley was born in Panama but raised in Jamaica where he quickly established a cricketing reputation as a batsman. He batted at number three, scoring 2,190 runs in Tests at an average of 60. 83, and 9,921 runs in all first-class matches at a average of 69. 86. He was chosen as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1934. After retiring as a player, he was employed as a cricket coach by the Jamaican government until 1962. He lived until 1983; his son Ron and his grandson Dean each played Test match cricket, for West Indies and England respectively. His son Ron played for the England cricket team in the 1980s and 1990s, while Dean played for England in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His grandson Dean also played Test cricket for England and the West Indies in the mid-2000s. He died in a car crash in Jamaica in 2007. He is buried in the St Catherine’s Cemetery in Kingston. He has been awarded a MBE for his services to cricket and to the West Indian cricket team. He also received a knighthood for his contribution to the sport of cricket in the 1940s and 1950s, and a CBE for services to sport in the 1950s and 1960s.
