His father is the former actor Edward Highmore, and he has a younger brother named Bertie. He has acted alongside members of his family in two separate films; his brother Bertie played his brother in Women Talkingdirty, and his father Edward played his father in Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story.

He received a scholarship to attend Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he earned a double first in Spanish and Arabic. In 2007, he lent his voice acting to the adventure film The Golden Compass and its video game of the same name. He next appeared as a young Max Skinner in Ridley Scott’s comedy-drama A Good Year. In 2006, he began in the live-action fantasy adventure film Arthur the Invisibles, released on 13 December. For the third film and accompanying video game, he provided voice acting for Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Robin Williams. This follows a musical prodigy as he searches for his parents for a wide story to tell.
