The FIFA World Cup is an international association football competition contested by the senior men’s national teams of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. The current champion is France, which won its second title at the 2018 tournament in Russia. The 21 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight national teams. The 2018 tournament will be held in Qatar, with the host nation hosting the tournament for the first time. The 2022 tournament will take place in the United Arab Emirates.

In 1914, FIFA agreed to recognise the Olympic tournament as a world football championship for amateurs and took responsibility for managing the event. In 1924, Uruguay won the next two Olympic football tournaments in 1924 and 1928. Due to the success of the first two tournaments, FIFA, with President Jules Rimet as the driving force, started looking at staging its own international tournament outside of the Olympics.
