The series premiered on August 23, 2015, and is currently in its sixth season, which debuted on October 11, 2020. A seventh season has also been announced. In September 2013, AMC announced they were developing a companion series to Thealking Dead, which follows a different set of characters created by Kirkman. The project was originally known as Cobalt; Kirkman confirmed, in March 2015, that the series would be titled Fear the Walking Walking Dead. In December 2014, the first four starring roles were cast: Kim Dickens as Madison Clark, the female lead; Cliff Curtis as Travis Manawa, the male lead; Frank Dillane as Nick; and Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia. In April and May 2015, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Mercedes Mason were announced as series regulars, both in unknown roles. In November 2017, it was confirmed that Lennie James would crossover and join the main cast in the fourth season. On July 28, 2018, the series was renewed for a fifth season, which premiered on June 2, 2019. On December 3, 2020, the show was renewed for a seventh season.

The original title of the pilot was composed by Atticus Ross, who was replaced by Danny Bensi and Saunderria Juransi at the beginning of the second season. After the third season, Paul Haslinger composed the score for the series in its first two seasons. The pilot and early episodes were filmed in Los Angeles, including the remaining episodes in Woodrow Wilson High School; the original title was also replaced by The Woodrow High School High School title. The fourth season also sees the additions of several new series regulars,. played by Garret Dillahunt, Jenna Elfman, and Maggie Grace. In December 2018, it was reported that Rubén Blades, who last appeared in the series’ third season,. would return in the fifth season as Daniel Salazar. On March 5, 2019,  it was announced that Karen David had joined the main season as Dakota, and Zoe Colletti would join the cast for the sixth season. In January 2019, Austin Amelio would joined the cast as Dwight, who had last appeared in the eighth season of The walking Dead. The seventh season was announced in December 2019, and premiered in October 2020. It has been announced that the show will return for a second season, with a seventh and eighth season to be announced later in the year. It is based on the comic book series of the same name by Kirk man, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard.
