The franchise also includes short films, a television series, live shows, video games and theme park attractions. The main films are collectively known as The Fast Saga. The series has been commercially successful and is Universal’s biggest franchise. It is considered the vehicle that propelled lead actors Paul Walker and Vin Diesel to stardom.

It is considered the vehicle that propelled lead actors Paul Walker and Vin Diesel to stardom. F9 is set to be released in 2021, with a tenth and eleventh film planned. The first film was released in 2001, which began the original trilogy of films focused on illegalStreet racing, and culminated in the film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. The series went under a change with Fast & Furious, which transitioned the series toward heist and spying, and was followed by four sequels. The third film was the least successful financially of the franchise, receiving lukewarm reception, and left the future of the series in limbo. After discussions with Universal, the pair shared interest in reviving the series with an interest in The Chronicles of Riddick, The Pacifier and Find Me Guilty. The pair also shared interest with Universal in acquiring the production rights to The Expendables 3 and The Expendable 4. The fourth and fifth films were released in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The sixth and seventh films released in 2013 and 2014, respectively, and the eighth and ninth film released in 2014 and 2015.

The ninth and tenth films are scheduled for release in 2016 and 2017, with the tenth and 11th films planned for 2018 and 2019. The eighth and final film will be released on November 14, 2018. The last film is scheduled for December 19, 2018, and will be called The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift. Two short films that tie into the series have also been released. Universal expanded the series to include the spin-off film Fast and The Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, while its subsidiary DreamWorks Animation followed this with the animated web television series Fast & the Furious Spy Racers. Soundtrack albums have been released for all the films, as well as compilation albums containing existing music heard in the films. The films have been the focus of other media, including attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood, live Shows, commercials, manyvideo games and toys. The film series began its tradition of filming in locations outside the United States in the first film in the series, which culminated in Tokyo Drift, which is the first of the film series to start filming in Japan. In 2000, actor Paul Walker had worked with director Rob Cohen on The Skulls. Cohen and Moritz brought him a Vibe magazine article published in May 1998, which detailed an undercover street racing circuit operating in New York City, and suggested a story that was to be a re-imagined version of Point Break, but set to follow Walker as an undercover cop tasked with infiltrating the world of underground street racing in LA.
