Critics consider him to be one of the originators of the modern salegy style that emerged in the 1970s. He rose to national prominence with his 1988 hit, “Samy Mandeha Samy Mitady” He has since released eight full-length albums and has toured extensively in Madagascar and abroad accompanied by his wife and adult children, who perform in the band with him. He was named Artist of the Year in Madagascar for two consecutive years and the role of Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund in 1999. He also contributed to the creation of two salegy subgenres, malessa and baoenjy. Jao Joby has been called the most popular singer in. Madagascar and the Indian Ocean islands, and is widely referred to as the “King of Salegy”. His success has earned him such honors as Artist of. the Year. in Madagascar. and the U.N. Population Fund. He currently lives in Antananarivo, where he works as a journalist. He has a daughter and a son, both of whom are musicians. He is married to the former wife of a former president of Madagascar, who is also a musician. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter-in-law, who are both musicians as well. He lives with his wife in the village of Anboahangibe, near Sambava in the northeastern coastal Sava Region of Madagascar.

His son and daughter- in-law live in the town of Mahanga, in the north of the island. He had a son with a girlfriend in the summer of 2013. He now lives in the city of Antananare, in north-east Madagascar, with his daughter and her husband. He and his wife have three children, two sons and one daughter. He recently had a daughter with a new partner, who lives in a nearby town, and plans to have a second child with her in the spring of 2015. He says he has no plans to leave Madagascar in the near future. He wants to spend his time with his family and grandchildren in the south of the country. His wife and children live with him in the northern city of Diego-Suarez in the island’s north. He started singing in a band called The Players in 1972. The band toured the region for the next four years, recording two 45rpm singles and performing in Mahanga and other towns and villages throughout the region before disbanding in 1979. After briefly performing with a band named Kintana, Jao joby moved to Antananaren. He studied sociology for two years at the University of Antivoarivo before accepting an offer to work as a radio manager at the national radio station. In the early 1980s, he moved to the city to pursue a career in journalism. He became a full-time professional musician the following year.
