It stars Justin Chatwin, Emmy Rossum, James Marsters, Jamie Chung, Chow Yun-fat, Joon Park, and Eriko Tamura. The movie was released in Japan and several other Asian countries on March 13, 2009, and in the United States on April 10, 2009. It has since been canceled by Funimation and Toei, who have stated they do not have any plans to release a sequel.

The film was meant to be the first of a series, though all subsequent films were canceled. It received negative reviews by both critics and Dragon Ball fans, particularly for its script, cast, and unfaithfulness to the source material. It performed poorly at the box office, grossing only USD 9. 4 million in North America and a worldwide total of USD 58. 2 million against a budget of USD 30 million. In Dragonball: Evolution, the young Goku reveals his past and sets out to fight the evil alien warlord Lord Piccolo who wishes to gain the powerful Dragon Balls and use them to take over Earth. It is the first official live-action adaptation of theDragon Ball manga. Both Toei Animation and Funimation stated that they have no involvement with the live action film adaptation of Dragonball. The movie was released in Japan and several other Asian countries on March 13, 2009, and in the United States on April 10, 2009. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox and released in the U.S. and Japan on April 14, 2009 and in other countries on April 15, 2010. It has since been canceled by Funimation and Toei, who have stated they do not have any plans to release a sequel to the film. The sequel, Dragonball 2, was released on April 25, 2011, and was released worldwide on April 28, 2011.

It follows the adventures of the team as they try to find the seven Dragonballs before the next solar eclipse when Ōzaru the Great Ape will return and join forces with Piccolo. In the film, Piccolo reveals to Goku that he is himself an infant, having been sent to Earth as an infant to destroy the Dragon Ball when he grew older. The team must find all the Dragonballs and defeat Piccolo in order to save the Earth from the evil god of the underworld, Shenron the Eternal Dragon, before he can take control of the Earth and turn it into a super-villain. The final battle sees the team defeat the evil Piccolo and Shenron in a battle for the title of “Eternal Dragon” The film ends on a cliffhanging cliffhanger, with the final battle taking place in the middle of the night. It also features a cameo appearance by the film’s main character, Justin chatwin, who plays the role of the young son of the lead character, Son of Gohan, who is later revealed to be a martial arts master and a member of the Dragonball team. It  was directed by James Wong, produced by Stephen Chow, and written by Ben Ramsey, and distributed by Fox Films. It premiered in Japan on March 12, 2009; in the US on March 14, 2010; and in Europe on March 16, 2011; and worldwide on March 17, 2012; and on March 20, 2012.
