The franchise’s fortunes would change drastically with the acquisition of Dirk Nowitzki, who would become the cornerstone of the most successful period in franchise history, leading the team to its first NBA championship in 2011. After acquiring the eventual 2019 Rookie of the Year Luka Dončić in the 2018 NBA draft and trading for All-Star Kristaps Porziņģis in 2019, the Mavericks, led by their two young European stars, returned to the playoffs in 2020. The Mavericks are coached by Dick Motta, who had guided the Washington Bullets to the NBA Championship in 1978. Kiki VanDeWeghe was drafted with the 11th pick of the 1980 NBA draft. In the brand-new Reunion Arena, Mavericks defeated the Spurs, 103–103, taking place in the 103rd game of the NBA’s Reunion season. In 2013, the team won the NBA Finals for the first time in their history, beating the Golden State Warriors in the final game of a seven-game series. The NBA Finals was the first game the Mavericks had ever played in the United States, and the first since the NBA moved to New York City in 1994.

The game was played at the Madison Square Garden, which is now the home of the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets. The Dallas Mavericks play their home games at the American Airlines Center, which it shares with the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars. The arena is also home to the Dallas Stars, the Dallas Mavericks’ American Hockey League team, the Texas Rangers and the San Antonio Spurs. The last NBA championship was won by the Mavericks in 2012, when the team went on to win the Finals for a record-breaking 21st time. The current Mavericks coach is Rick Carlisle, who has been in charge of the team since the start of the 2013-14 season. The club has won three NBA division titles and one conference championship. The most recent came in the 2004-05 season, when it won the Southwest Division title. The name Mavericks comes from the 1957–1962 TV western Maverick; the fans chose the title with 4,600 postcards received, beating Wranglers and Express. The University of Texas at Arlington, who also uses the Mavericks nickname, had objections about a shared name but did not attempt any legal action.
